Children and Guardians of the Lakes

The Mhuysqa culture is undergoing a revitalization and re-existance.
The sprawling metropolis of Bogotá occupies what had been Mhuysqa territory.
Five communities, or resguardos, remain in the Bogota (Bacata in Mhuysqa language) metropolitan area.

Repurpose-IT started a partnership with the Resguardo of Cota in December 2017.
The team receives guidance from the community’s spiritual leader, Abuelo Fernando Castillo.
His “homework assignments” clarify our approach to conserving indigenous culture with intention and mindfulness.

The city schools adhere to a Ministry of Education mandated curriculum; therefore, the normal implementation in primary and secondary schools was not an option.
In October 2019, the team adapted their teacher training and held a focused implementation at the Ubamux preschool, kindergarten, and cultural center autonomously run by the resguardo Cota.
Ubamux is the Mhuysqa word for greenhouse, symbolizing the importance of an ecopedagogy based education and learning from mother earth.

In addition to a carefully selected collection of cultural videos, the Mhuysqa edition of the laptops contain an offline copy of the Muysc cubun language dictionary.
With guidance from Mhyusqa authorities and community research, linguistic scholars have been able to reclaim 2,833 words of this previously extinct language.

In March 2020, Repurpose-IT visited with leaders from the Mhuysqa Resguardo of Cota,  the territory of Sesquile, and the governor of the Bosa community.
The Sesquile territory is the location of the sacred Laguna Guatavita, which is the origin of the legend of El Dorado.
Following COVID-19, Repurpose-IT will resume and grow it’s partnership with all five Mhuysqa groups- Cota, Chia, Sesquile, Suba, and Bosa.
