People of the River

Repurpose-IT’s pilot project with ONIC took place at the Wounaan Nonam schools in the villages of Puerto Pizario and Chachajo in Colombia’s Pacific coast rainforest. These close-knit communities and schools thrive despite challenges of abject poverty and food insecurity. In this decade, they’ve been displaced from their ancestral homeland several times due to ongoing violence.

In August, 2017 the Repurpose-IT Team made the first visit to understand their current reality and to meet with the community for their approval and guidance. Repurpuse-IT returned twice that year for week-long teacher training sessions and to check on the donated laptops. The results of this pilot project greatly exceeded everyone’s expectations.

Although Repurpuse-IT has not been able to return since December 2017, we remain very actively engaged with the teachers and members of the community.
